Scrivener’s
selection is a major coup for the ICA as he is widely considered
to be one of the most sought after barristers working today.
As one lawyer linked to motor sport commented, he is “the
best you could get” on an international sport tribunal.
The
70-year-old barrister is one of the best-known criminal silks
at the Bar, with a practice spanning more than 30 years.
A former Bar chairman, his most prominent cases include the
Guildford Four, the Guinness trial and the miners’ strike.
Scrivener is also a prominent figure in sports law having
represented Formula One’s Team Lotus, football club
Tottenham Hotspur and golfer Bernhard Langer.
He will be joined
at the ICA by Edwin Glasgow QC, who will be the UK Deputy
Titular Judge on the International Court.
Glasgow was a founding member of the Bar Sports Law Group
and has appeared in many of the leading sports law cases
in the UK.
ICA Secretary General David Ward said: “I’m
proud that the ICA continues to attract Judges of exceptional
legal ability and knowledge of motor sport. They serve in
a volunteer capacity, elected by national motoring and motor
sport clubs, providing an appeal system available to all
the disciplines of the sport at a world level.” |

Both Scrivener and Glasgow have a longstanding interest in motor sport. They are Stewards of the Royal Automobile Club and sit on the MSA’s National Court.
Colin Hilton, MSA Chief Executive said: "We are delighted that Anthony Scrivener
and Edwin Glasgow will become the new UK judges for the FIA International Court.
The MSA strongly supports the important work of the International Court and these
appointments emphasise the MSA's commitment to the court's vital voice in solving
disputes in motor sport at the highest level."
Two senior lawyers from the United States are also joining the membership of
the ICA. Nominated by the Automobile Competition Committee for the United States,
John J. Cassidy is to be the US titular member of the court whilst Stephen L
Braga will be his deputy. Both are partners at Baker Botts LLP and have extensive
experience in sports law and motor sport.
They
were elected at this year’s FIA General Assembly as the 18th Titular/Deputy
Members arising from the recent enlargement of the ICA membership. |
