The FIA Academy,
which is made up of eight senior members of the FIA and its
national associations, gave the award to Mr Lunardi for his
exceptional work in Road Safety in Italy. Improving road safety
is one of the priority policies Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi
has assigned to his government.
Mr Lunardi has devoted himself
to improving road safety by successfully campaigning for new
laws and regulations
in Italian Parliament. He has been responsible for ushering
through a number of safety proposals such as a penalty points
system for drivers’ licenses, a Certificate of Aptitude
test for the operation of motorbikes, and

the obligatory
use of reflective clothing for motorcyclists.
In addition, by
supporting the adoption of a number of revised safety standards,
he has been instrumental in achieving major
changes in road user behaviour. These
changes have led to important drops in the numbers of accidents and road accident
victims.
FIA President Max Mosley, a member of the Academy, said: “Pietro Lunardi’s
contribution to improving road safety in Italy has been outstanding. He typifies
the work and the standards that the FIA is striving to achieve worldwide.”
